Design your career pathway

We are shining a light on our recently qualified and current apprentices from across the company, celebrating their achievements and progression at bott!

The site itself is forever changing with the addition of new machines and technology that everyone gets to be involved with and learn.- Nathan Powell

“I have worked at bott for 6 years and 7 months. I started as an apprentice on the shop floor and have worked in all the areas around the factory. After 3 years, I moved into the design office where I have been ever since. I was looking to get straight into work in a hands on job rather than staying in a classroom so an apprenticeship suited me.

Along with the Level 2 and 3 I received in engineering, I have learnt many skills such as time keeping, team work skills, communication and problem solving. These skills have allowed me to be more organised and better planned outside of work.  I think it is important to be involved in National Apprenticeship Week because this gives young people a better insight into what the future could look like for them.”- Nathan Powell, former Apprentice, now Engineering Technician at bott, Bude.

Since joining the team, the factory has been ever-evolving with the introduction of new processes and machinery such as the laser cutter. Pete has gained a range of skills in his 9 years at bott, including how to troubleshoot machinery, plan projects and communicate effectively in his workplace, all skills that have also been beneficial outside of work for his own projects such as renovating his house. As well as being local, Pete said he liked that bott produced high quality products shipping worldwide. We asked him what advice he would give himself if he could go back to his first day, his response was “Everyone wants to see you do well, so if you need help with anything just ask.”

Apprenticeships are great but generally talked about and understood less than other options. The only way to change this is for employers to be involved, open their doors and show what it’s all about.
